Rediscovering My Photography Career After Motherhood
Motherhood comes with countless joys and blessings—and sacrifices, too. My photography career and dreams were put on the back burner while I stayed at home raising my three boys. I’m afraid I wasn’t one of those all powerful women who could “do it all”. When I felt my inability to provide quality service mid 3 babies ages 3 and under, I let that back burner flame fizzle out and just focused on my babies for a while. Getting back into the workforce now they are a little older has been an exhilarating time of rediscovering myself.
I've tried many side quests over the last couple of years: working in a bagel shop, teaching dance, making and selling piñatas. Somewhere in that journey, I picked up a camera again. I told my mom that out of all the art forms I explore, photography gives me the biggest thrill. Portrait photography has always been my passion. Capturing the true personality of a fellow human is what gives me that thrill.
I've tentatively dipped my toe into the photography world over the last year, but self-doubt and timidity have always held me back. I'm great at creating art—I'm not great at putting myself out there.
The Greene family has a long-standing tradition of "counter talks." We've often joked it should be a podcast, but the things discussed around my parents' kitchen counter are matters of the heart we would never want shared. During one such session, an idea emerged: my brother and I could go into business together.
Ben is an artist and a theater director. We've worked together planning theater productions, photoshoots, events, and other artistic endeavors. Anything we do together always comes out better. One idea builds off another until the final product surpasses what either of us could've created alone. Ben isn't really a photographer yet, but he's an excellent content creator and a whiz at editing and graphic design with Canva. His training as an artist gives him a strong foundation for composition, and he's a born director and stylist. (I'll get him up to speed on apertures, shutter speeds, and ISO). I know that our two minds and skill sets combined will yield beautiful results.
So here we are, a brother and sister photography team. We have a couple of weddings booked already. We will launch some promotional portrait session deals soon and see where this road leads us.
